I been debating on making some more car skins. I want to try various pantone swatches and see how they do in game. I know there won't be a complete color match between the pms# and whatever the color it gets translated to in the game, but I'm more interested in the effect of PMS metallic colors and how they'll translate over. Now to figure out what car model to attack. Thinking about an FXO and going lowrider style. IF the metallic swatches do OK, then that would help.
Climate change.....really....

Climate change, climate change climate change. I actually believe we are experiencing some sort of change in climate conditions and I also think we are helping it along. But that's really not my issue about it. Nope. My problem is the over hyping about it. We just had a serious cold front (for us). t hasn't been this cold since the 1980's The demands on electricity overloaded the grid and we were out of power for 24 hours. We might lose power again, but til then... Anyways, I was reading new stories and stumbled across one from Bloomberg. This was an environmental case to the extreme. And I read about three outright lies before I decided to stop reading the article. It was supposed to be an article about the weather here and it's effects. Instead it was an overly politicized slanted piece of crap. Blamed the loss of power to the loss of power to refineries to make heating oil and then blamed that on our use of fossil fuels to cause these "radical" weather changes like hard freezes. Here's the thing. As we get away from fossil fuels, there's no demand for said fuels. The refineries are NEVER shut down. They suspend operations on certain production. And until very recently, there just hasn't been much demand for any sort of oil. And by the time they get that oil needed for now, it'll be hot again. But here's this guy writing this crap trying whatever he can to blame this cold front on man made climate change and I guess, not using fossil fuels to fight it? He's so damned desperate to politicize this event in his article, he's lost the plot. Both in the article and mentally. Anyways, it's 13 degrees Fahrenheit. This translates to pretty damned cold in Celsius. And just another Tuesday in Finland. People here have lost the plot. Some people are parking their cars in the garage and leaving it running to heat up the house. Idiots putting generators inside their houses. I don't think they'll be doing that next time. No. There's not going to be a next time for most of them. Gheesh. All they needed are a couple of more blankets. And not to go in and outside too much. It's not the South Pole.

I've whined about something like this before. Only I was thinking of different year models of the same cars. But if they did go that route of actually branding the cars, I'd imagine that there would have to be more car models. Cause what they have now is basically a line-up of a single brand. How many different Toyotas are there for 2021? BMW? GM? And out of those, how many models could/would be converted to racing? What? Maybe three or four? The more I think about it, maybe this sort of thing should be modded after the game is finished. Great. Another issue. We have the TBO's the LX4(?) and the road cars in different classes. shouldn't there be some sort of parameters established to keep modded cars in those classes? There are cars in real life that don't quite fit in any of those classes They are more like somewhere in between. But going back to branding the cars? Would the guys that made the FXO also make the RB4 and the econobox GT? Man, that's a lot of crap to think about.

Quote from Scawen :Thanks for the feedback.

I was wondering about this often requested change.....

I feel it's a bit like having a broken cylinder head gasket and increasing the turbo boost to try to get some more power to compensate. Big grin
Other comments - thanks for the feedback. I'm reading and thinking...

Hey! Thanks for putting that in a language I can understand.
The offroad tire option for the GTR cars.... Will that apply to A.I. cars as well? Or more like will we be able to use A.I. road cars and GTR cars for single player/server filler on rallycross layouts?

Only 35FPS? Really? I've seen as much as 150 frames in a second. Of course I worked in a picture framing shop at the time. Think they'll model a picture framing shop in the updated version of S. City?

I realized that the thread for the September Progress Report is locked. What they ought to do is UNLOCK it and re title the thread to say NEXT September Progress report. Yeah. I know. Dumb joke. Wake me up when September ends.... another dumb joke. I gotta a question about the day/night racing modes. Setting and rising suns. If we held long endurance races, would that effect happen? And the effect of the sun's position has on shadows. I'm guessing all that's been factored in?

Quote from lfsrm :It will be so much more easy for Eric if LFS supported multi-layers textures, because as of now he needs to add some sort of "floating" geometry with alpha textures if he wants to add tags or other type of imperfections, which will of course make the scene heavier on the hardware.

Personally I am not that bothered with a "too clean" environment for the time being, those kind of things can be easily updated after the public release, I am pretty sure that even after the final release Scawen will continue to update the graphic engine.

Well. When you're trying to get a PB or pass someone, all the little details really aren't noticeable. And they really shouldn't be.
But look at it this way. A model railroad track. You go to the store or whatever and buy one. You set it up in your house somewhere. Now you got this little toy train going around in a circle. It looks impressive - for about a minute and a half. So then you go and buy little trees and a little building to put around it. It's a little more interesting but gets boring still. Then let's say you go total nuts about it, mount it on a board, do landscaping, lights add all sorts of little details. That little circle is now something that will mesmerize people and keep them occupied for a while. All those little details enhanced the train set.
And now I'm thinking a little deeper.... Different looking people for different tracks. In a real life setting, would spectators look the same at Fern Green as they would be as Ashton Club? I don't think so. Especially after having seen a race track in Jamaica. Go to a drag strip, then go to a GT circuit and you'll see what I mean.

Wow. The work on S. City looks amazing! You know. It's really nice that you go into the progress reports of how things are coming along, Scawen. I've learned there's so much that goes into this. The thought of how a car scrapes along on different surfaces... Man. There's a lot more to it than just making a polygon go around in a virtual circle. And yeah. Like what's been posted earlier, South City looks a little empty at this point. How do you fill that in? Like if you put people in the background and detail them, in a few years they're going to look dated. Like say if ten years everyone decides to dress like the 1890s or something. Or all that weird cosplay becomes so mainstream it gets incorporated into regular style clothing. I know that sounds dumb and a little nit-picky, but I remember something. Years ago back when the cars had the really cool tinted windows, I made a skin for one of the cars, I wanted to include a screen shot of it on Fern Bay with what I had thought were girls in one piece bikinis...... I'm still a little traumatized by that Scawen. For a while I thought there was something going on with Eric that y'all wasn't telling us about. So yeah. Y'all might wanna pay a little attention to the pedestrians.

A.I. Cars.... At current, the AI drivers are a lot like most of the other drivers I run across in real life. You could just replace the helmet and racing suit with an idiot looking at their phone and there'd be no need to increase the I part of the A. In fact, you could probably dumb them down a bit further and it would increase the realism. But does having AI cars in online races take away from the resources of the server? Or are most servers so powerful that's just not really an issue?

Sorry... but I keep picturing a bunch of gamers waiting to bust down the doors at Wally World, scrambling over the idiots fighting over the big screens going straight to the games section - only to realize you can't get this game in a store. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but how will a promotion work for a 17 year old game that's not really advertised?

So like I'm watching this show on Netflix. Lilyhammer. It's a show about a mob guy living in Norway under the Witness Protection Act. Anyways, it got me to thinking about something totally unrelated. I was bored and this idea popped into my head. I started thinking about all the people I've met that are Scandinavian. Norwegian, Swedes And Danes are legendary for their linguistic skills. Well all the ones I've talked to was in English. All had an accent, but really clear and easy to understand. In fact, they could move here and get jobs as news anchors. Hell. They speak English better than I do. OK, then I start thinking about people from Minnesota and Wisconsin And the Dakotas here in the USofA. Most of those folks are Scandinavian in descent. Well they too speak English with an accent. It sounds nothing like native Scandinavians though. Not at all. Not even almost. That's pretty weird I think. Cajuns and Creoles been here forever and their accents still sounds a lot like a French person speaking in English. And the funny thing about those Scandinavian-Americans... Yeah. I think they can only speak in English. Ain't that a bunch of nonsense?

Quote from Forbin :Assuming the ground and air are the same temperature, I think you'd expect the part in contact with the ground to cool faster via conduction? Once the tyre's temperature is fully equalized with ambient air, there would be no hot/cold patches on the tyre. Again, assuming the ground and air are the same temperature.

IRL, the road can be warmer than the air, but the reverse is also possible.

uhhh.... wouldn't the air temp have to be really cold and the ground temp really hot for a noticeable difference? And wouldn't the car have to be parked for a while to even almost have to worry about hot and cold patches on the tires? And wouldn't that temperature difference go away after a few revolutions of the wheels anyways?

Quote from AtomAnt :Dude, I was a teen in the 70's, Triumph was a staple in my musical diet. Seen them many times, being a Canadian band they always played at some event or another close enough to drive to.

Enjoy this one.

LOL Back in the day I wa in a garage band. We'd get wasted and play this at parties.... or try to when the singer was too far gone. The yodeling was awful.
This version sounds a lot different than the radio version.
Yeah. Most people think of Rush when the subject of Canadian rock bands. No one seems to know about these guys. Rush and Triumph had big followings here in Houston. Everyone else in the country were into The Knack and Duran Duran. Not here. They'd sell out venues for like two and three days straight.
Another Bad ass band from Canada....One a these days I need to go up there. People tell me I'd like Alberta.

Quote from Dygear :Scawen, Eric, and Victor. You have all made an incredible product and I'm very excited to see what the future holds for LFS. The new SO is absolutely beautiful and the new HDR effects are very impressive.

One day, 20, 30 years from now, I do hope you considering opening the source code for all of this. This code base is a shrine to what a small team of dedicated professionals can do. Outstanding work!

ROFL One day, 20, 30 years from now, they might get this game finished.
